In the scenic region of Ladakh lies ‘Rancho’s School’, originally named the ‘Druk Padma Karpo School’, established in 2001 by Principal Stanzin Kunzang, drawing inspiration from Buddhist traditions and philosophy.
The school’s picturesque campus served as a filming location for the 2009 blockbuster ‘3 Idiots,’ with one of its iconic walls featuring in the film’s closing scene where a character, Chatur, attempts to relieve himself on it, only to be shocked by a bulb-carrying wire held by mischievous children on the first floor.
Regrettably, the original ‘idiotic wall’ was damaged in the 2010 flash floods, which prompted the creation of a duplicate on another area of the school’s grounds. Before the disaster, tourists flocked to the site, causing chaos and disrupting the school’s routine. However, with the addition of a visitor’s center, ‘Rancho’s Café,’ and a designated photo zone outside the school, visitors can now enjoy the famous landmark without disturbing the institution’s students.
Despite the international recognition and publicity brought about by the movie, the school remains devoted to its authentic identity and prefers to be known by its original name.
